چکیده

Spiral waves occur in several natural phenomena, including reaction fronts in twodimension excitable media. In this thesis we attempt to characterize the motion of the spiral tip of a rigidly rotating wave and a linearly travelling wave in the context of a lattice perturbation. This system can be reduced to its center manifold, which allows us to describe the system as ordinary differential equations. This in turn means dynamical systems methods are appropriate to describe the motion of the tip. It is in such a context that we work on spiral waves. We study perturbed rotating waves and travelling waves using standard techniques from dynamical systems theory.

Spiral anchoring in anisotropic media with multiple inhomogeneities

Various PDE models have been suggested in order to explain and predict the dynamics of spiral waves in excitable media. In two landmark papers, Barkley noticed that some of the behaviour could be explained by the inherent Euclidean symmetry of these models. LeBlanc and Wulff then introduced forced Euclidean symmetry-breaking (FESB) to the analysis, in the form of individual translational symmet...

Controlling the stability transfer between oppositely traveling waves and standing waves by inversion-symmetry-breaking perturbations.

The effect of an externally applied flow on symmetry degenerated waves propagating into opposite directions and standing waves that exchange stability with the traveling waves via mixed states is analyzed. Wave structures that consist of spiral vortices in the counter rotating Taylor-Couette system are investigated by full numerical simulations and explained quantitatively by amplitude equation...

Spiral Waves and the Dynamical System Approach

Spirals are common in Nature: the snail’s shell and the ordering of seeds in the sunflower are amongst the most widely-known occurrences. While these are static, dynamic spirals can also be observed in excitable systems such as heart tissue, retina, certain chemical reactions, slime mold aggregates, flame fronts, etc. The images associated with these spirals are often breathtaking, but spirals ...

Spiral anchoring in anisotropic media with multiple inhomogeneities: a dynamical system approach

Spirals abound in excitable media. Various PDE models have been suggested in order to explain and predict some of the incarnations of these dynamic entities. In two landmark papers, Barkley [1, 2] noticed that a general family of these were caused by the Euclidean symmetry (inherent in the media) of the models. But the experimental universe is un-perfectly Euclidean, by necessity. The heart, fo...

Computation of the drift velocity of spiral waves using response functions.

Rotating spiral waves are a form of self-organization observed in spatially extended systems of physical, chemical, and biological nature. In the presence of a small perturbation, the spiral wave's center of rotation and fiducial phase may change over time, i.e., the spiral wave drifts. In linear approximation, the velocity of the drift is proportional to the convolution of the perturbation wit...
